Delivering Logistics Excellence in Recycling

Acumen has in depth experience and expertise in the provision of Kerbside Collections of dry recyclates and Waste Transfer Stations for Local Authorities. Since 2003 these services have been provided to Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council and St Helens Council. Both of these contracts demonstrate working closely with Councils to improve recycling performance.

As an example in Newcastle under Lyme between 2006 and 2009 the overall recycling rate improved from 19.26% to 28.2%. The introduction of a new service in early 2010 has increased the recycling rate dramatically to over 55%. This substantial improvement has been achieved through an effective partnership with the Local Authority and significant innovations in the collection service. This included moving to an Alternate Weekly Collection for the refuse collection service; extending the organic waste collection services to all properties with a garden; collecting a wider variety of recyclables - such as plastic and cardboard; and adding the separate collection of food waste on a weekly basis.

Acumen has invested in specialist kerbsider vehicles and a new Waste Transfer Station to ensure the scheme integrity. An operational innovation that combines the use of twin compartment compactor vehicles collecting cardboard and plastics, with the kerbsider vehicles collecting glass, paper, cans and textiles has improved the load fill and productivity of the collection operation. All vehicles are fitted with Satellite Tracking systems that are internet delivered, allowing the Acumen Customer Service Teams to see the exact locations of vehicles and recent history at street level to respond quickly to our customers and residents service enquiries.
